By: tammy sons

]]>

Duck Potatoes is the layman name for Sagittaria also known as arrowhead. It is one of the twenty species of the aquatic plants. It is harvested in the winter, fall, and spring of the year. It is an edible vegetable root cultivated from the wild or in places as crops in East Asia and North America. Duck Potatoes have large leaves with flowers making it easy to spot in the wild settings such as ditches, lakes, and swamps where it grows underwater.

The name is derived from the potato appearance and it grows underground. The plant has large leaves that are firm that spread about four inches wide and two feet long. The leaves taper toward the stem and grow in a fan shaped rosette from the underground rootstocks. It flowers into a white blossom having three petals. The flowers are elongated on long thick stalks about 12 inches long with an abundance of leaves.

The Duck Potatoes grow in a tubular form. The leaves are generally on the surface of the water with the remainder of the plant submerged in water. The flowers are considered unisexual with the female flowers being located at the base of the plant and the male flowers located higher on the plant.

Growing Vegetables

vegetables

The environmental requirements for growing vegetables are quite simple. The best vegetable gardens are grown in sunny locations where the soil is moist and nutritious.

In order to maximize the productivity of your garden plot you should first consider which vegetables your family enjoys most. It is senseless to waste valuable garden space on vegetables that no one is going to eat. Plan the planting order of your vegetable garden.

Start with a sketch showing approximately where you want to locate each vegetable crop.Increase your gardens’ production potential by planting cool-crop vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage early in the spring. Use these early vegetables when they are mature and then re-plant the same spot with warm-weather, short-season crops such as lettuce and radish. Leave only enough space for development between low-growing vegetables such as radish, lettuce, and onion. Space can also be conserved by growing trailing vegetables such as cucumbers on trellises or other supports. Plant newly developed, dwarf vegetable varieties that require less space to grow than their larger, traditional counterparts. If ground space for a garden plot is not available vegetables can be grown in containers. Vegetables can also be effectively grown in combination with annuals. Be sure to organize the garden so that tall growing vegetables do not shade low growing vegetables.

Growing Your Own Vegetables Is Best

Soil Preparation
Spade or rototill the garden soil deeply to break the soil into small clods. Add 454g. (1 lb) of granular all purpose fertilizer per 30sq. m. (37.5 sq. yd.) and turn the soil again. Rake the soil smooth and your garden is ready for planting. Improve the texture of heavy, clay-loam soils with additions of peat moss, compost, vermiculite, perlite, or sand. Do not work garden soil when it is wet.

Pre-Planting Care
Due to the short length of our growing season many vegetables are available as bedding-out plants. Vegetable bedding-out plants that can not be planted the same day they are purchased should be watered and stored in a shady location to prevent excessive wilting.

Planting Vegetables from Seed or Bedding-out Plants
Sow vegetable seeds in moist soil, just dry enough to be workable. Vegetable seeds are generally sown three times as deep as their diameter. Cover the seeds with fine soil, compost, vermiculite, or sand. Gently remove vegetable bedding-out plants from their packs or flats. Plant them in moist soil deep enough to bury the root ball and a portion of the lower stem. Plant vegetables started in peat pots or expandable peat pellets in the same way. In these cases also bury the peat pot or pellet. When planting vegetable bedding-out plants be sure to leave adequate room for development.

Watering
After sowing your vegetable seeds keep the garden soil consistently moist until the vegetable seedlings are established. Water freshly planted vegetable bedding-out plants thoroughly to give them a good start; use a starter fertilizer to establish a healthy root system. Thereafter, water your garden whenever the top 2.5-5 cm (1-2 in) of soil dries out. It is best to water early in the day. Keep plant foliage as dry as possible by watering at the soil level. Water droplets that remain on plant foliage overnight encourage the development of plant diseases. Do not rely on rain to water your vegetable garden sufficiently. It is important to observe the condition of your garden often to ensure continued growth and productivity.

Post-Planting Care
Keep your garden healthy by removing weeds as soon as they appear. Weeding is easier when garden soil is moistened before you weed. This makes the soil looser and more workable. Remove the weeds between the rows by scraping a flat-bladed hoe over the top few centimeters of soil. Pull weeds from within the rows out by hand. This reduces the chance of disturbing vegetable roots and prevents weeds from competing with them.

Something about container gardening for vegetables

Article by Wayetlighting

They say that good things come in small packages. It is absolutely fine if you do not have a big, spacious garden where you can plant vegetables. Who said you cannot have a beautiful garden if that is the case? All you need is an avid interest in gardening and the readiness to take care of the garden. One way to fulfill your interest in gardening inspite of not having a big garden is to do container gardening. Container gardening refers to gardening done in a pot or a vessel. It does not take a lot of space and there are many vegetables which are well-suited to container gardening. In case you were thinking on those lines, may be something about container gardening for vegetables is what you are looking for.

Vegetable Gardening in Containers

Have a pail or a flower pot or wire baskets or buckets or wooden boxes or even large food cans? If yes, then it is perfect for container vegetable gardening! Grab whatever you have amongst these to start with. Make sure that the container you choose has a wide mouth and not a narrow one. The size of the container of course depends upon the vegetable you pick. However, preferably containers measuring around 24 – 30 inches are considered good for container gardening. If the pots are too small, the roots would not get space and they would dry out quickly. A 5 gallon container is good enough for larger vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants. As you do it you would get better container gardening ideas.

Although a good number of vegetables can adapt to this kind of vegetable container gardening, it is better to have an idea of the vegetables that fit the bill. Carrots, radishes and lettuce, or crops that bear fruits, such as tomatoes and peppers are good options to consider in relation to container gardening for vegetables. This is a very important container gardening tip.

Another significant aspect about vegetable gardening in containers is the color of the container. This matters in vegetable gardens particularly when there is a chance that the container might be exposed to extreme heat or cold. Dark-colored containers would naturally absorb more heat which may cause damage to the plant roots. If there is no option and you have to use dark-colored containers, consider coloring them to a lighter color. That can be done in case of ceramic and clay pots, mostly. If that is not possible, try and cover just the container. This aspect has to be really taken care of and cannot be ignored in container gardening for vegetables.

There has to be a proper drainage system for the plants to grow properly when planting a vegetable garden. For that, ensuring that there are small holes at the bottom of the container is important. Water is required for these plants but if there is excess water, it has to be drained out, irrespective of the type of container you are using with regards to container gardening, vegetables, to be specific. But, having said that, it has to be taken care that water does not dry off too quickly as against an excess. Clay pots are such that if a considerable amount of water is lost, there is a threat of the plant getting dry. From that perspective, plants which have been planted in clay pots should be taken care of to prevent moisture loss.

As far as soil and fertilizer is concerned, synthetic mixes or the recent soilless potting mix work best for container gardening plants. The soilless mixture drains quickly, are lightweight and free from soil-borne diseases and weeds. Consider peat-based mixes when you are looking out for mixes. These have peat and vermiculite and are believed to be good for vegetable container gardening. An organic or slow release fertilizer is good for vegetable gardening in containers.

Wayet lighting co., ltd, wholesales LED grow lights, OEM &ODM are available, looking for LED light for plants grow, wayet lighting, your FirstChoice.

Last thing to remember with regards to container gardening for vegetables is that they require more care and watering than normal gardening. You may need to keep a daily watch on the plants and their growth. If you think the water needs to be drained well, you would have to do some adjustments to the pot or water the plants less. Eventually, all these will pay off because then you can flaunt your homemade veggies to your guests! What say? All the best!

Practical Pest Management Solutions With IPM

By: aitliFuller

]]>

However, the basic meaning of IPM is that it is a pest control strategy that uses a combination of physical, biological, cultural, and chemical methods, to name a few. The methods are conducted in three stages, from prevention to observation, and to intervention. IPM is considered a holistic approach created to reduce or even eliminate the use of pesticides altogether.

Whether you spent your Winter holidays trying to get rid of the rodents or whatever other pest was lurking around in your home, now is a good time to continue those activities, as long as cold weather is here. Spend your February on limiting pest access in an IPM way. Below are some of the ways you can participate in a natural pest management activity, without using harmful pesticides, a benefit for you and your family.

Check Door/Garage Door Sweeps

Your door sweeps and seals, mostly used for blocking wind and weather, can also serve as a means to stop pests from entering. Door bottoms can shift and lose their ability to keep out intruders, so it is a good idea to check them and make sure the weather stripping is still performing. If you can see light coming in from underneath the door, the seal needs to be fixed. Garage doors can have the same problem. Check your windows and screens as well and any openings that pests can use to enter the home.

Maintain and Monitor Your Soil Level

Most modern home designs have foundations which are tall enough so that no wooden portion of the structure is within eight inches of the ground, in order to prevent termites from attacking and consuming wood without ever leaving the comfort of the ground.

With this in mind, it is a good idea to scoop out any excess soil along the side of the foundation, so that you are not giving termites or other pests that extra leverage to get in at a critical entry point. The key is keep the soil level below the level of the foundation.

Remove Debris

Along with maintaining the soil level, you should also do a cleanup of any leaves and/or debris that have accumulated near or at the foundation of your home. Debris will only encourage rodents to make a nest by your home and provide a “stakeout” for rodents to be able to gain easier access into the home.

Trim Your Trees

To keep out squirrels and other such rodents from entering through an attic or another structure from the roof of the house, work on trimming your tree limbs. Rodents can gain access to the home by using tree branches, especially those that overlap the roof line, to get into the home. Trim your limbs back to at least eight to ten feet from the roof. If you don’t feel comfortable with tree trimming, an alternative option is to place sheet metal bands around the trunks of the trees to discourage squirrels and other rodents from climbing them.

Remove Excess Plant Growth

As mentioned with trimming tree limbs, the same applies to plants around your home. Pruning appropriately can help stave off pests or at least provide some control. Experts recommend pruning plants when they are young to minimize the need to remove large limbs later on, thus avoiding large pruning wounds. If there are pests using one part of the plant, you can prune them out as well.

Store Firewood Properly

If your home has a fireplace that you and the family like to gather around during cold weather, then you should be concerned about how you store the firewood that you use. Insects can emerge from the firewood that you have in your home, and while not necessarily harmful, these bugs can be quite a nuisance. Pests such as termites, wood-boring beetles and carpenter ants can often be found feeding within the logs of the firewood.

Store firewood outdoors away from the home and off the ground – this can increase air circulation for drying and helps prevent logs from being too moist. Before bringing in firewood, shake or knock the logs together to remove any insects still on the bark. You may also want to check the bottom of log carriers because insects can crawl into them when logs are brought inside.

With such IPM methods to employ this month, you are not only using your common sense, but you are also providing an enormous environmental benefit to your home, neighbors, and surrounding community.

Organic Garden Pest Control – Stop Pests The Organic Way

Modern technology has allowed many of us to receive benefits that primitive societies did not have. Unfortunately, in the area of organic gardening, pest control has lost its way in our technologically advanced society. We have forgotten that pest control for our crops can be done in an organic way. The spreading of pesticides over our crops that lead to build ups within the aquifers that provide the crops water can become devastating over time. Here are a few tips on how to successfully create organic compost and maintain pest-control a natural way.

Finding the right way to take care of pests that will attack and destroy all of your hard work is a very challenging task. One problem actually comes from yourself as you try to stay away from the inorganic pesticides that could harm your aquifers and plants that you are growing alike.

Most alternatives present the easy side of life and alow you to quickly spray and be done with your pest control. However, this is not the best way at all as most organic farmers know. This movement is growing with each and every day, a need to go away from things and alternatives that can lead to not only a poisoning of our planet, but also the poisoning of the very food that we will eat at the dinner table.

If you have ever wondered how the people of old used to do this, it was because they had more of a knowledge base with nature. Though simple, they were in tune with what worked and what did not. They had limited possibilities and this honed their skills for survival over the course of hundreds if not thousands of years.

Pesticides have often been thought of as the savior for our ever-increasing human race. The ability to spray a substance over our crops that will stop natural invaders was a dream come true until science discovered how harmful these pesticides could be. By using organic garden pest control, a methodology that has been around for centuries, we can effectively grow crops and maintain pest control the natural way.

What is missing from modern thinking is that we have been taught that most bugs and pests that infiltrate our garden area are primarily harmful to the crops that we are growing. However, by using organic garden pest control techniques, we can still eliminate the pests and create a product that is better tasting and less toxic for everyone that eats it.

Taking this a step further, it is easy to forget that our planet was once a much greener place to live. Through the modern industrializing of our natural world, we have created a situation that may lead us to the brink of some kind of ecological disaster unless each of us decides to do our part and use our individual choices to become aware of what we use to keep our plants healthy and safe.

One of the best ways to control pests on a large or small scale is introducing bugs that eat certain bugs. One of the most well-known organic ways to control pests is with the ladybug. The ladybug preys upon other insects like aphids and will not damage the crops that it cohabitates with. Another wonderful insect to have in your crop area is the praying mantis. This insect feeds on the larger insects that can also severely damage your organic crops.

If you have a family and you are wanting to grow organic food because you see it as more healthy, using these techniques to protect the crops that you grow is not only better for the environment but better for your family as they will be the ones primarily ingesting this food. Likewise, if you are growing and organic garden with the purpose of marketing what you grow, you will feel better knowing that the crops that you are providing the public are free from chemical and toxic residues.

Take a few moments every day to realize that your world is one that can be taken away in a heartbeat. With over 6 billion people on the planet, it is easy to understand how our individual choices, like a collective hive, and make or break this world and our food supply for our children. All we need is the knowledge to do this, and we can begin, if you use common sense, to make better choices with the food we grow each day.

Whether you are growing an organic garden that is only a few feet wide or the size of your backyard, using organic garden pest control techniques will allow you to grow healthy foods at the same time as you protect the area in which you live. By focusing upon health conscious solutions, you will be providing the best possible food for your family and anyone else that will benefit from your organic gardening.

East Fresh Home Grown Berries

Article by Tammy Sons /Tn Nursery

Eat Fresh Home Grown Berries! Before purchasing or planting a berry plant, it is a good idea to know how many berries each variety will produce and how the berry harvest will be used or given away. It is hard to estimate the amount of berries the family will eat yet it is a good guess to say that the plant will provide more than the average family can consume. Plan for the berries to be harvested, prior to purchasing the plants. Stock up on freeze bags and canning jars since it is a good bet there will be plenty at the harvest time to freeze and make other food products with the berries. The third year of the plant’s life is when new plants should be planted to replace the aging strawberry. Strawberry plants produce runners every year and the runners need to be inserted into the ground so they become the new plants the following year. Depending on the growing conditions, the plants will produce about 10 to 15 pounds of berries every year. Each berry plant needs special sun exposure and water requirements. Make sure to observe each plant based on the species for optimal harvest and plant life. Use mulch for the berry plant to reduce weeds and keep the plant moist. As the plants grow, make sure to prune and train the plants to encourage new growth. Home Grown Vegetables

My closest friend has always had a green thumb and though we share just about all common interests until recently we differed on home gardening. I had never really given any type of gardening any thought and had always viewed her passion for this as a waste of time. Things changed recently however when I found out that I could save quite a bit of money by growing my own vegetables.

Being a vegetarian my diet consists mostly of earth grown foods and with the price of veggies rising and becoming over inflated my girlfriend approached me and told me that she was going to begin growing her own vegetables both to save a few dollars and to get a better quality product. I was interested though my motivation was solely saving money. I found myself dreading working in her indoor garden but I was surprised at how much fun I was having.

Perhaps it was because I was spending more time with her and perhaps it was because I was learning something new but I began looking forward to the three days a week that I was spending in the greenhouse. As I began to get a hold on gardening and working with different types of soils and plants, I was surprised to find there was so much more to it than simply throwing seeds into the ground and watering things.

Several of her grow lights went out within my first couple of visits. I didn’t think these lights were important but my assumption was quickly refuted by my girlfriend when she explained that these types of lights are designed specifically to help plants grow. I actually spent one day of my first week hunting down specific types of commercial lighting for the greenhouse. The lights she wanted were fairly expensive but we went halves on the cost as I felt as though we were becoming partners in gardening.

Once the new lights were installed we got back to the ground work. Three weeks later I was pleased to see the bell peppers I planted on my own begin to sprout. It was at that point that I admitted to both myself and my girlfriend that I was enjoying doing garden work. Not long after that the rest of our first batch of vegetables sprouted and some even ripened and were ready to be eaten.

I’ll say this about growing your own food. It’s hard work and it takes time to grow these things however the flavor and even the size of the vegetables far outclass anything you find in the store. In addition to this, home grown vegetables contain no unnatural preservatives and go into your kitchen fresh; no weeks of shipping are involved. This experience leads me to believe that I will never buy vegetables from any store again.

For those of you who have never eaten anything homegrown, you need to at least once. Once you decide to go this route you’re in for a treat and I can guarantee that you too will begin growing your own vegetables. Before I became a vegetarian I had eaten a steak that came from a cow raised by my friend. This was much like vegetables in that the homegrown food was far better than any store bought product. Though it takes care and effort to grow your own food, the work is worth it. Your body and your bank account will thank you for it!

What Everyone Should Know About Home-Grown Fruits And Vegetables

By: Ronald Porkshner

In today’s busy world it’s entirely too easy to make excuses, even when there are a hundred reasons why you should do something and perhaps only 1 or 2 why you can’t. Growing you own produce at home is a prime example.

Many believe that to successfully reap the rewards of home grown produce, it requires a huge amount of space and hours of back breaking work. In reality, growing your own produce can be as large or small scale as you want or can manage. Even growing just a 3 or 4 tomato plants and herbs in window boxes or patio pots can be hugely rewarding and help to reduce the cost of your weekly shopping bill.

If you have a garden, a small plot of just 4 feet square divided into four 2 X 2 square sections can produce a reasonable amount of edible delights throughout the year.

In terms of time commitment and effort, this is largely dependent on the size of the plot and the type of produce you wish to grow. While some crops may require regular watering and a little care and attention, other crops are happy to be left in the ground to fend for themselves.

So what are the benefits of growing your own produce? Well apart from the obvious cost savings of having to buy things from the shops and supermarkets, and being hugely rewarding, you’ll never beat the taste of something that has gone from ground to pot to plate in minutes or hours.

With zero air miles and organically grown you know exactly where your fruit and vegetables have come from and that they have had no chemical treatments, preservatives or pesticides, making it by far the most environmentally friendly food you’re likely to ever eat.
